- IBU: 43
- COUNTRY: Canada
- REGION: Peterborough, ON
- BREWERY: The Publican House Brewery
From The Publican House;
Our West Coast style pale ale starts off with pine and citrus on the nose, with notes of toffee and citrus on the palette. With an IBU of 43, Square Nail has a bold finish with lots of hop character. We brew this beer all year.
Appearance | Clear amber orange with a dense foamy white head that slowly dissipates.
Smell | Hops, grains, citrus (grapefruit and tangerine), hint of pine and floral hops.
Taste | Hops, bitterness, grapefruit, malts, pine, biscuit, sweet toffee, and hints of grass.
Aftertaste | Lingering notes of bitterness, hops, and grapefruit.
Overall | This is a West Coast style Pale Ale that hails from Peterborough, the hometown of The Brew Head. A strong bitter hop flavour presents itself immediately. It’s obviously filtered; you can clearly see through the glass. The Brew Head admits that the first time that he had this brew, it was a drain pour. The second time was decent. This time, well, it was a little disappointing. The consistency isn’t there at all. It’s not a bad brew, but it’s a little disappointing. The lack of a date stamp on this can raises the question as to when this particular can was brewed, and if it contains any preservatives that may hinder the flavour.
The Brew Head will have to re-visit this one in the near future. (Maybe it was a bad batch?)
Food Pairing | Burgers or Chicken Wings.
UPDATE 05/19/2014: The Publican House Brewery emailed The Brew Head stating that they do use all grain, all natural, and contain no preservatives for all of their products. The Brew Head was also informed that Publican House is looking to purchase a printer to date-code all of their products in the near future. This is great news from the hometown brewery! Also, check out their new seasonal (that should be out this weekend…) ‘High Noon Ale’. Look for a review on that shortly!
